About the College Counseling Office

There are three people in the College Counseling Office at Georgetown Prep who work with students and parents during the college selection and application process: the Director of College Counseling, another College Counselor, and an Administrative Assistant.

Georgetown Prep is a member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, The College Board, and other professional and educational organizations related to the college admissions process. The school is represented at regional and national meetings of these organizations

Each fall, Georgetown Prep hosts more than 100 representatives from colleges around the country. Some colleges hold area-wide receptions at Georgetown Prep, and in late winter, a college fair for Jesuit colleges and universities is held. Many colleges conduct interviews of applicants at Prep. Georgetown Prep also participates in the College Fair that is sponsored by Washington-area independent schools in early May.

In the course of a Prep junior's second semester, his college selection process gains momentum. In January, a program begins in the religion classes where the College Counselors introduce the search process and they key aspects of selecting a college. In late January, the Director of College Counseling meets with junior parents to introduce them to the college selection process at Prep.

Prep's "College Counseling Handbook" is currently available online (see right hand tool bar). The reference handbook is written specifically for Georgetown Prep students and parents with many guidelines and "how-to's" on the search and application process. In the spring, a second meeting is held for the parents of Prep juniors. During this meeting, various representatives from college admission offices speak, and answer parents' questions. The college counselors meet with juniors several times in their religion classes. The search process, essay writing and interviewing skills are emphasized. Individual meetings with students and parents take place through the second semester of junior year, during the end of the summer, and throughout first semester of senior year. A college counseling newsletter is mailed monthly to parents and distributed to students.

Through the College Counseling Office at Georgetown Prep, students are offered as much assistance as they need, but they are also encouraged to recognize their responsibility in selecting the college they will eventually attend. Applications and essays are reviewed, practice interviewing is available, and communication with colleges about the status of applications is undertaken.

All Georgetown Prep students plan to continue their studies in college. Prep students are encouraged to select a college where they will be happy, academically challenged, and successful.
