Georgetown Prep Resident Life

Resident Life

Georgetown Prep is the only Jesuit boarding school in the United States. A central part of Prep for more than two centuries, the resident program brings the students and faculty, both Jesuit and lay, together in a supportive and nurturing environment. Above all, the resident program seeks to create "men for others," through self-discipline, respect for the community, and individual achievement.

A unique aspect of the resident program is its ratio of one adult per every five students, providing an unparalleled opportunity for the students to develop close relationships with the staff. Under the guidance of the Residential Dean, a staff of four House Masters and 12 Residential Faculty supervises Georgetown Prep's residents. Dedicated, educated, and professional, these Residential Faculty foster the student's academic, social, and emotional development through their commitment to the Jesuit ideal of "cura personalis," or "care of the individual". Unlike at other boarding schools, Georgetown Prep offers a resident program in which the staff have only one responsibility: caring for the students. Every resident staff member is charged with encouraging and nurturing each individual student to strive for excellence in all areas of life. Whether helping a student with his homework, playing basketball in the gym, or counseling a student, the Residential Faculty continuously work to develop each young man's potential. The resident staff prides itself on the high level of student support they provide.

A typical school night is structured to provide the students with ample time for study and other activities. Each weekday night, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., students are required to participate in Study Hall, during which time they complete their school work.  Supervised by the Residential Faculty, Study Hall provides each student with the discipline necessary to succeed academically. Study Hall concludes at 9:30 p.m., a time where the community comes together for group prayer and reflection on the day.  On certain evenings, the entire Residential Community gathers in the Chapel for prayer and reflection.  Between 9:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., the students are encouraged to complete their school work in the library, use the athletic facility, socialize with friends, or use one of the resident lounges.  Bed times vary by class: freshman are in bed by 10:45 p.m., sophomores by 11:00 p.m., juniors by 11:30 p.m., and seniors are in their rooms by 11:30 p.m.

Weekends are a special time for the residents, when they can participate in activities, visit with family and friends, meet students from other schools, and enjoy all the Washington, D.C. area has to offer. Prep provides interesting activities every weekend for its residents, such as mixers, trips to various athletic events, and visits to cultural and educational sites. The resident school is also a member of a consortium of twenty boarding schools that offers activities throughout the year, providing the opportunity for Prep's residents to socialize with students from other boarding schools.

Ultimately, Prep's resident school offers its students a complete experience. Our residents are challenged to succeed in all areas of life. They are continually led to try harder, strive farther, and accomplish all that they can as individuals. Our goal is to educate "the whole person," by providing encouragement, discipline, and support. We believe strongly that only through educating "the whole person" can we truly succeed in developing "men for others."
