SENIOR SERVICE PROJECT:
PROJECT PROPOSAL
REQUIREMENTS:
1. To work with persons who are experiencing economic poverty or are otherwise marginalized. Work with the disabled or the elderly will satisfy your requirement for they experience an a disadvantaged place in society. Therefore, clerical work, coaching Little League, being a lifeguard at the local pool, or teaching Sunday School, while laudable, will not be considered appropriate for fulfilling the schools service requirements.
2. The work should be as interpersonal as possible.
3. Preferably the work should be an intensive one to two week program. Students may also complete the requirement by doing 50 hours over the course of the summer. Both models are designed to give students an intensive experience while offering agencies/programs and their clients a substantial and appropriate time commitment.
4. There should be a definite on-site supervisor who will evaluate the quality of service and ensure safety and security.
5.
The project must be approved by the Christian Service Director (CSD) before the end of the school year. PROJECTS NOT APPROVED BY THE CSD WILL NOT SATISFY YOUR SERVICE PROJECT REQUIREMENT. IN SHORT, IF YOU DECIDE TO DO OR MODIFY A PROJECT OVER THE SUMMER WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL, IT WILL NOT COUNT TOWARDS YOUR SERVICE REQUIREMENT.6. A sketchbook will be used to reflect on your service experience. Sketchbooks are to be handed into your religion teacher on the first day of School (Schola Brevis).
7.
Separate evaluations will be written by you and your supervisor on forms provided by the Christian Service Program. Your supervisor's evaluation is to be handed in with your sketchbook.8. The service rendered is to be gratis. No pay is to be accepted for giving the service.
9. See the the example below to model your proposal after

For my Senior Service Project, I would like to participate in a workcamp sponsored by my parish, St. Luke in McLean, Virginia. And organized by Group Workcamps, a Christian service organization based in Denver, Colorado. Around 25 teenagers from my parish will travel to Norwich, New York, and join other similar groups from across the country to repair the homes of elderly and unemployed people living in this small rural community. There will be over 200 teenagers in all, and we will do painting, caulking, light carpentry, drywall and similar jobs. The St. Luke group will be bringing many of its own supplies from Washington.
During the day in Norwich, we teenagers will be organized into work crews of six with an adult leader. The other members of my work crew will not be from St. Luke but from other churches in other parts of the country. In the evening I will rejoin the group from St. Luke at the school where we sleep. An important goal of the program is for us to form special relationships with the local people whose houses we are repairing. For example, we may invite these individuals to join us at lunch or to come back with us to the school for the evening program.
What will a typical day at the work camp be like?
- 6:45 AM - 7-7:45 AM - 5:00 AM - 8:45 AM - 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM - 9-9:45 PM |

The leader and coordinator of the St. Luke Workcamp group is Steve Mournighan. Mr. Mournighans phone number is (703) 821-1081. He is willing to write about my participation in the project and to speak to the leader of my particular work group about my contribution. Presently, the workcamp participants are undertaking a series of fund-raisers, including car washes, plant sales, and "Buy-a-Nail" donations. We hope to raise $5000, which will be matched by our parish, to cover all work camp expenses.
The Chenango River Workcamp is well organized and I am enclosing the following materials which give a more detailed description of the project and its goals as well as St. Luke Parish goals -
- Descriptive material about the organization Group Workcamps and the Chenango River project;
- May 5, 1996, Sunday bulletin from St. Luke Parish which mentions the workcamp and fundraisers;
- St. Luke Youth Ministry handout about Workcamp 96.
We endorse our son John Smith's participation in the Chenango River Workcamp.
